




S. Manetti Engraving — Francolino degli Italiani Femmina
An original 18th-century hand-colored engraving by Saverio Manetti from Storia naturale degli uccelli (A Natural History of Birds), published in Florence between 1767 and 1776. Drawn and etched by Violante Vanni and Lorenzo Lorenzi under Manetti’s direction, the series was praised for its vivid coloring, large folio scale, and animated portrayals of bird species.
This plate depicts the female Italian francolin (Francolinus italorum femina), rendered with exceptional feather detail and lively stance—an exquisite example of Enlightenment-era natural history engraving.
Origin: Florence, Italy, 1767–1776.
Material: Hand-colored engraving on laid paper, modern wood frame.
Dimensions: 18" × 13".
Condition: Light toning and small foxing spots to sheet; colors remain strong; beautifully preserved under glass. Some moisture staining on matting.
