S. Manetti Engraving — Falco Peregrinus

An 18th-century hand-colored engraving by Saverio Manetti from Storia naturale degli uccelli (A Natural History of Birds), one of the most celebrated ornithological works ever published. The series, produced in Florence between 1767 and 1776, was drawn and etched by Violante Vanni and Lorenzo Lorenzi under Manetti’s direction. Noted for its vivid coloring and lively postures, the work is among the “great bird books” of natural history illustration.

This plate depicts a falcon in striking stance, exemplifying Manetti’s fusion of scientific observation and humanistic expression.

Material: Hand-colored engraving on laid paper, modern wood frame.
Dimensions: 18" × 13".
Condition: Light toning and foxing to sheet; colors remain vibrant; beautifully preserved under glass. Some moisture staining on matting.
