Hand-Colored Engraving of Joséphine

Sale price$210.00

A mid-19th-century hand-colored engraving depicting Joséphine de Beauharnais, Empress of France and enduring icon of Empire-era elegance. The portrait reflects the period’s fascination with neoclassical femininity, imperial dress, and romanticized court imagery, rendered in soft tones and framed by an ornamental border typical of deluxe 19th-century gallery publications.

The engraving originates from The Josephine Gallery, published in 1858, as noted in a period handwritten inscription on the verso (now mounted onto backing).

The print is beautifully presented within a vintage fabric-lined mat, selected to echo the warmth and texture of the paper, and framed in a contemporary wooden gilt frame that enhances the palette without overpowering the image. A refined, layered presentation well suited to a gallery wall, study, or intimate corner of a collected home.

Origin: Mid-19th century.
Medium: Hand-colored engraving on paper.
Dimensions: Approx. 15" x 12".
Condition: Light toning and scattered spotting consistent with age, including to the verso; professionally reframed and ready to hang.
