English Brass-Mounted Book Slide by Baker, London

Sale price$175.00

A finely constructed antique English book slide crafted in Rosewood and fitted with decorative brass mounts, featuring Gothic quatrefoil and studded detailing. The adjustable form allowed the slide to expand to support books of varying sizes, making it both a practical and decorative object for a 19th-century desk or library shelf.

Inside the slide is an original maker’s label reading “Baker, Maker, 16 Cockspur St., London”, identifying the piece as the work of Baker, a known London maker and retailer of desks, writing boxes, and library furniture in the late 19th century. Cockspur Street was a notable address for luxury goods and cabinetmakers serving professional and scholarly clients.

The rich patina to the brass and the warm tone of the walnut reflect age and use, lending the piece a handsome, collected presence. Today, it functions beautifully as a book slide, shelf accent, or sculptural object within a library or study.

Origin: England, late 19th century.
Maker: Baker, 16 Cockspur St., London.
Material: Rosewood with brass mounts
Dimensions: Approx. 13.5" x 5.5".
Condition: Surface wear and patina consistent with age; brass shows mellow toning, wood with light wear. Hinge and expansion mechanism function properly, although missing one nail on hinge. Some loss to wooden veneer on interior flap.
