c. 1816 English Botanical Engraving of Comfrey

Sale price$150.00

This finely detailed early 19th-century botanical engraving depicts comfrey, a plant long valued for its medicinal properties and frequently studied by botanists of the period. Rendered with exceptional clarity, the composition highlights the plant’s drooping bell-shaped flowers, textured veining, and robust stem structure.

The engraving was published in 1816 by S. Curtis of Walworth, a respected English botanical publisher, and reflects the era’s growing interest in scientifically accurate yet visually elegant plant studies. Recently reframed in a classic gilt frame with wide matting, the piece presents beautifully and lends a quiet, scholarly presence to a library, study, or layered gallery wall.

Origin: England, published January 1816 by S. Curtis, Walworth.
Material: Hand-colored botanical engraving on paper; modern gilt wood frame with mat.
Dimensions: Approx. 12.5 " x 17".
Condition: Engraving shows minimal age-appropriate toning and light foxing consistent with early 19th-century works; frame and matting are in excellent condition.
