19th c. Steel Engraving — The Riven Shield After Philip Richard Morris

Sale price$250.00

A 19th-century steel engraving titled The Riven Shield, engraved by William Greatbach after the original painting by British artist Philip Richard Morris, circa 1875. The scene depicts a knight recounting the wounds borne by his shattered shield to a quietly attentive lady — a moment rich with emotional restraint and symbolic detail.

Widely interpreted as an illustration of the Arthurian legend of Lancelot and Elaine, the composition reflects the Victorian fascination with medieval romance, chivalric devotion, and moral storytelling. Executed with finely controlled line work characteristic of high-quality steel engraving, the print captures exceptional detail throughout the figures, textiles, and architectural setting.

The engraving was executed by William Greatbach, a highly regarded Victorian engraver known for his precise line work and tonal depth. The print demonstrates dense, controlled engraving throughout, with especially fine handling in the textiles, architectural elements, and figures, creating a painterly sense of shadow and volume.

This piece has been custom framed and elevated with hand-marbled paper matting, individually painted to echo traditional marbled bookbinding papers of the 18th and 19th centuries. The warm palette and organic movement of the marbling complement the engraving beautifully, creating a layered, collected presentation that feels scholarly and timeless rather than decorative. Finished in a classic, contemporary wooden frame that complements the age and character of the print without overpowering it.

A compelling example of Victorian literary art, intended for refined domestic interiors and appreciated for both its narrative depth and technical excellence.
