19th c. Steel Engraving of Lichfield Cathedral, West Front (Winkles’ Cathedrals)

Sale price$125.00

A finely executed 19th-century steel engraving depicting the west front of Lichfield Cathedral. Drawn by R. Garland and engraved by B. Winkles for the renowned publication Winkles’s Cathedrals of England and Wales. The composition emphasizes the cathedral’s richly ornamented Gothic façade, with its elaborate tracery, sculptural detailing, and distinctive triple spires rising with striking verticality.

The architectural precision is balanced by small narrative details at ground level—figures and horses animating the foreground—adding scale and a sense of life to the scene. The engraving showcases the exceptional clarity and line work characteristic of steel plate engraving during this period.

Presented in a black and gilt frame that complements the depth and contrast of the image. A strong standalone piece, or an ideal companion to other Lichfield engravings from the same series.

Origin: England, circa 1836–1842 (Winkles’s Cathedrals of England and Wales).
Material: Steel engraving on paper.
Dimensions: Approx. 6.5" W x 8.5" H.
Condition: Toning, foxing, and light wear consistent with age. Presented in a later frame with minor surface wear.
