This natural history engraving features the Lophophorus, a striking Himalayan pheasant species, rendered with bold feather detail and a strong stance on a rocky outcrop. The work combines anatomical precision with a sense of the bird’s dramatic natural environment.

Origin: 19th century (artwork).
Material: Paper, engraving with period hand-coloring.
Framing: Contemporary gilt bamboo–style wooden frame, made in USA.
Dimensions: 5" x 7" (6" x 8" framed).
Condition: Very good antique condition; light toning and wear consistent with age.

Engraved by William Home Lizars (1788–1859), a renowned Scottish engraver and painter whose finely detailed plates appear in some of the era’s most important ornithological and zoological works. Some works also credit J. Stewart del., the illustrator who drew the original studies later engraved by Lizars. Together, their collaboration reflects the practice of 19th-century natural history publishing, combining field artistry with master engraving for both scientific study and decorative beauty.
