19th c. English Mahogany Salt Box

Sale price$650.00

A finely constructed antique salt box, crafted in richly figured mahogany with bookmatched veneer panels to the front. This traditional domestic form would have been hung near the hearth or work surface, used to keep salt dry and easily accessible in the kitchen or pantry.

The shaped backboard features pierced scrollwork and a central decorative cutout, lending the piece both utility and charm. The hinged lid opens to a deep interior compartment, with a small lower drawer likely intended for additional storage or collecting excess grains. The warm patina and visible grain throughout speak to years of practical use.

The veneer panels show natural age-related shrinkage lines and hairline splits consistent with early mahogany veneers, which are typical of the period and material. These do not affect the structure and are part of the box’s honest surface history. The drawer retains its original knob, and the hinges appear period-appropriate.

A beautiful example of early domestic storage, equally compelling styled in a kitchen, pantry, or used decoratively for letters, matches, or small collections.

Origin: England, early 19th century.
Material: Mahogany with mahogany veneer; brass hinges and pull.
Dimensions: Approx. 20" x 9" x 5.5".
Condition: Age-related surface wear and veneer shrinkage consistent with period; splitting on decorative back and previous repair present on backing swirl (pictured); stable and structurally sound; drawer and lid function smoothly.
