17th c. Naval Ships Copperplate Engraving

Sale price$165.00

This finely detailed copperplate engraving, published in Allain Manesson Mallet’s Description de l’Univers (Paris, 1683), depicts five ships at sea, carefully labeled with letters for reference to the original text. Mallet, cartographer and engineer to Louis XIV, was celebrated for his encyclopedic approach to world geography and his beautifully rendered engravings of maps, city views, and naval subjects.

Executed in the copperplate engraving technique, the work showcases the precise linework and cross-hatching typical of the late 17th century, capturing both the grandeur of maritime exploration and the artistry of early scientific publishing. Numbered “253” at upper right, this engraving remains an exceptional piece of naval history.
