"Philosophers and Actresses... of the Eighteenth Century" (1852-1853) by Arsene Houssaye

Sale price$325.00

A beautifully bound and marbled four-volume set by French writer Arsène Houssaye, comprising Philosophers and Actresses and Men and Women of the Eighteenth Century, each complete in two volumes.

These works are part of a 19th-century tradition of literary portraiture—blending biography, cultural commentary, and storytelling to bring the personalities of the 18th century vividly to life. Houssaye focuses not only on major intellectual and political figures, but also on actresses and society figures, offering a more nuanced and human view of the Enlightenment era.

Origin: New York (Redfield) / London (Bentley), 1852–1853.
Material: Leather bindings with gilt tooling; marbled page edges.
Condition: Wear to boards and spine ends consistent with age; interior pages clean and legible with light toning, one leather spine coating missing (pictured).
