A handsome pair of silver-plated salt and pepper shakers by William Adams, with rounded bodies, waisted necks and domed, pierced covers finished with small knop finials. Each stands on three curved legs with pronounced lion-mask mounts and paw feet, lending these practical table pieces a wonderfully sculptural character. Shell and fluted ornament borders the covers, contrasting with the smooth, reflective bodies.
William Adams was a Birmingham silver and electroplate manufacturer whose output included decorative condiment sets and reproduction silverware. Here, the combination of animal feet, shell ornament and shaped silhouettes brings the richness of larger serving pieces to a smaller scale. Lovely alongside patterned china and antique glassware, the pair would also sit particularly well with the William Adams lion-footed mustard pot in this collection. Sold together as a pair.
