A silver-plated mustard pot attributed to William Adams, the firm associated with Birmingham whose decorative silverware was extensively exported to the American market. Bearing a shield-form trade mark, this example combines a removable cobalt blue glass liner with an elaborate silver-plated surround. Shells, scrolling foliage, and a gadrooned border frame the rounded rectangular opening, while four lion-mask legs descend to sculptural paw feet. A hinged, stepped cover with an urn-shaped finial and a high loop handle complete the richly detailed silhouette.

Made for serving prepared mustard, the pot reflects the tradition of giving even the smallest table accessories considerable decorative attention. Its deep blue liner creates a striking contrast with the silver and separates the condiment from the metal body, lifting out for cleaning. The accompanying spoon rests through a notch in the cover, allowing the lid to close between servings. A distinctive addition beside a roast or cold supper, particularly among collected salts, antique flatware, and patterned china. Includes the pot, cobalt glass liner, and spoon shown.
