An unusual antique brass watering can or household water carrier, featuring a compact oval body, elongated angled spout, and beautifully proportioned arched carrying handle. Its warm golden finish and thoughtfully constructed form recall the practical elegance of traditional English and European country house accessories.
The vessel features a flattened oval body with a rolled lower rim, a broad fixed carrying handle, and a smaller curved handle at the rear for additional control when pouring. A hinged lid opens to reveal the interior, while the narrow, angled spout allows for more directed pouring. Visible soldered joints and reinforced fittings lend the piece an appealing sense of craftsmanship and utility.
Similar vessels were used throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries for indoor watering and domestic water service. Unlike larger garden watering cans, their compact proportions and controlled spouts made them especially well suited to tending houseplants, conservatory collections, and indoor arrangements. Their functional designs have since made them desirable decorative accessories for traditional and collected interiors.
The brass-toned surface has developed a handsome, mellow patina, with subtle variations in color, darkened seams, and traces of oxidation that accentuate its construction. Equally charming displayed on a kitchen shelf, among potted plants, or as part of a collection of antique copper and brass, this is a wonderfully characterful piece of domestic history.
