A charming late Victorian English card press, crafted in richly figured Mahogany with beautifully turned wooden screw mechanisms and a warm, timeworn patina.

The rectangular press features two adjustable wooden screws which draw the upper and lower plates together, originally used to press and flatten playing cards, preventing the cards from curling or warping with use and humidity.

The upper surface is particularly wonderful, centered by an oval embroidered silkwork panel depicting playing cards surrounded by delicate flowers and foliage, all enclosed within a metal frame. The combination of functional construction and decorative needlework is characteristic of the beautifully embellished card presses produced during the Victorian period.

A wonderful and unusual example of a 19th-century card-room accessory, equally appealing displayed on a library desk, writing table, or bookshelf.

Origin: Mid-late 19th century; England.
Material: Mahogany, silk embroidery behind brass and glass frame.
Dimensions: 9.5" L × 4.5" W x 6" H.
Condition: Good antique condition with age-related wear, surface scratches, inlay loss, and patina.
