Walker & Hall Aesthetic Movement Butter Knife

An English silver-plated butter knife by Walker & Hall, with an elongated blade richly engraved with scrolling foliage, a fan-shaped motif and a finely shaded border along one edge. The asymmetric decoration follows the blade’s curved outline, leaving an open area of silver to balance the intricate ornament. A slender stem and plain, rounded handle give the decorative blade particular prominence.

The combination of stylized botanical ornament and geometric detail reflects the Aesthetic Movement’s interest in bringing artistic design to useful household objects. Walker & Hall was an established Sheffield maker of silver and electroplate, and this piece makes a lovely addition to a collected table.
