A charming set of English transferware plates by W. R. Midwinter in the “Landscape” pattern, featuring a romantic neoclassical landscape rendered in soft cobalt blue. The central scene depicts a classical garden with a domed temple, bridge, figures, and distant architecture, surrounded by an elaborate floral and scrolling border with a scalloped rim.
Marked to the reverse “Landscape / W. R. Midwinter / England.” The pattern is documented on Midwinter wares dating from the early 20th century, with examples known from the 1920s and 1930s.
A beautiful example of English transferware with the kind of classical imagery and decorative border that makes these pieces particularly lovely displayed alongside other blue and white ceramics.
