Victorian Shell-Form Crumb Scoop

An exceptionally decorative Victorian crumb scoop, featuring a dramatic fan- or shell-shaped tray with deeply radiating flutes and a scalloped edge. The broad, shallow form was designed to sweep crumbs from the tablecloth after a meal, while the long, highly sculptural handle terminates in a curled, scroll-like finial.

The combination of shell-form shaping, radiating ribs, floral ornament, and sinuous handle gives this piece an especially ornamental character. Crumb scoops were practical accessories used between courses to clear the dining table, and examples were produced in silver and silver plate in a variety of elaborate Victorian forms.
