A wonderfully substantial Italian pottery centerpiece bowl, made in Tuscany and finished in a warm, buttery yellow glaze with deliberately rustic brown accents.
The broad, shallow basin is punctuated by three applied loop handles, giving the otherwise simple form an unusually architectural profile. One section of the rim appears to form a subtle pouring lip, a feature found on traditional Tuscan three-handled serving bowls. Large examples of this form were designed to function equally well as generous serving pieces and decorative centerpieces. Contemporary Tuscan workshops continue to make three-handled pouring bowls in much the same broad, shallow configuration.
The surface is especially appealing. Rather than a perfectly uniform finish, the yellow glaze has variations in tone with rubbed and distressed areas revealing the reddish earthenware body beneath, particularly around the rim, handles, foot, and exterior. The result has the relaxed character associated with rustic Tuscan pottery and makes the piece particularly effective mixed with older European ceramics.
Its scale and shallow profile make it particularly good as a large fruit bowl or table centerpiece, where the three handles remain visible rather than disappearing beneath the contents. It would also work beautifully empty on a farmhouse table or kitchen island, where the worn yellow surface can stand on its own.
