A handsome turned wood candlestick, featuring a dramatic barley-twist column and an exceptionally rich, figured wood grain. The warm brown surface is filled with swirling variations, darker knots, and organic figuring characteristic of burl wood, giving the piece a wonderfully sculptural quality. The tall spiral-turned stem rises from a substantial flared base and terminates in a beautifully shaped candle cup.
Barley-twist turning became especially popular in European furniture and treen during the Victorian period and continued into the early 20th century. Comparable English examples date to the late 19th century, including Victorian treen candlesticks with similarly turned spiral stems.
A wonderful piece for a mantel, bookshelf, bedside table, or collected vignette. Holds a standard taper candle.
