A beautifully rebound copy of The Letters of D. H. Lawrence, edited and introduced by Aldous Huxley, bringing together the correspondence of one of the most influential and controversial English writers of the early 20th century.
Originally published by William Heinemann in 1932, the collection was assembled after Lawrence's death by his close friend Aldous Huxley, who also contributed its substantial introduction. Huxley's personal relationship with Lawrence makes the volume particularly significant: rather than simply presenting literary correspondence, the book offers a remarkably intimate record of Lawrence's travels, relationships, creative work, and often forceful opinions. The first Heinemann edition appeared in 1932, and bibliographic records confirm later Heinemann impressions, including the 1956 printing represented here.
This copy is especially appealing for its bespoke fine binding by Frost & Co., whose binder's stamp is visible along the inner edge. Frost & Co. of Bath is documented as a professional fine binder; auction records identify the firm on similarly elaborate bindings, including a twenty-volume set of Joseph Conrad's works bound in blue polished calf with gilt-decorated spines.
Here, the volume has been bound in blue leather, with an inset red leather title label and extensive gilt tooling across the raised-band spine. The boards are restrained by comparison, finished with fine gilt rules and corner ornaments, while the interior is particularly beautiful: richly patterned marbled endpapers are surrounded by an elaborate gilt-tooled leather turn-in. The contrast between the blue leather, red label, gold decoration, and marbled paper gives the book the character of a traditional English library binding.
A particularly lovely addition to a collected library, equally compelling for its literary significance and its craftsmanship as a fine-bound book.
