A beautiful early Victorian T. Phillips & Son “Marino” ironstone plate, transfer-printed in a soft blue and produced in Burslem, Staffordshire, around 1845–1846.

The plate features a romantic waterside landscape at center, with small boats moving across the water toward fanciful architecture in the distance. An ornamental urn and overflowing flowers anchor the foreground, while trees and architectural elements recede into the softly printed landscape. The scene is surrounded by a broad, densely patterned border and finished with a gently shaped rim.

The Marino pattern is documented in mid-19th-century Staffordshire production and was made by more than one pottery, including George Phillips, Thomas Phillips, and Thomas Godwin. This example can be specifically attributed to Thomas Phillips & Son by its printed factory mark.

Thomas Phillips & Son was a remarkably short-lived Burslem pottery, operating under that name around 1845–1846. That narrow production period makes the maker's mark particularly useful for dating this example. The reverse bears the firm's elaborate blue printed backstamp reading “IRONSTONE / MARINO / T. PHILLIPS & SON / BURSLEM,” together with a separate impressed mark.

A lovely example of early English blue transferware, particularly beautiful for its softly printed scenic center and unusual allover border. Display in an antique cupboard or plate rack, incorporate into a blue-and-white plate wall, or layer with white ironstone and other early Staffordshire pieces.
