A striking mid-19th-century Staffordshire black transferware dessert plate by T. J. & J. Mayer, decorated in the romantic “Rhone Scenery” pattern.
The central scene depicts a dramatic Gothic architectural monument set within a picturesque landscape, with figures gathered along the water and distant architecture visible through the trees. An elaborate border of scrolling foliage, floral sprays, and fine linear ornament surrounds the scene, creating a wonderfully rich and atmospheric composition.
The decoration is executed in black transfer on an ivory earthenware ground, with the dark transfer softening naturally across the surface to create beautiful tonal variation. The warm crazing, subtle discoloration, and age-related surface wear further enhance its antique character.
Produced by Thomas, John & Joseph Mayer at the Dale Hall Pottery in Longport, Staffordshire, the firm operated under this name from approximately 1843–1855. “Rhone Scenery” is among the patterns documented from the pottery during this period.
A particularly handsome example of early Victorian black transferware, equally lovely incorporated into an antique tablescape, layered with other transferware, or displayed individually for its picturesque architectural scene.
