Quantity: Pair of 2

A charming pair of mid-19th-century Staffordshire transferware berry bowls by T. J. & J. Mayer, decorated in the romantic “Rhone Scenery” pattern.

The bowls feature an atmospheric architectural landscape with a picturesque bridge, figures, trees, and distant buildings, surrounded by an elaborate border of scrolling foliage and floral ornament. The dark black transfer decoration has softened beautifully with age, creating the wonderfully muted charcoal-and-ivory palette characteristic of antique black transferware.

Produced at the Dale Hall Pottery in Longport, Staffordshire, by Thomas, John & Joseph Mayer, the firm operated under this name from 1843–1855. The “Rhone Scenery” series is documented to this period.

The smaller size makes these especially versatile for both collecting and styling. Use them as traditional berry or dessert bowls, or incorporate them into a tablescape for small servings, condiments, or as charming decorative pieces layered with other antique transferware.

A beautiful pair for the collector of early Staffordshire ceramics, or anyone drawn to the atmospheric quality of black transferware and romantic landscape patterns.
