Carder Steuben Ruby Reeded Ruffled Art Glass Bowl

This exceptional early 20th-century Steuben bowl is a beautiful example of Frederick Carder’s inventive approach to American art glass. The bowl is formed in clear transparent glass with a softly rounded, footed body and a wide, dramatically undulating rim accented with closely spaced cranberry-red reeding. The clear body is finished with a delicate raised optic pattern, while the applied Gold Ruby threads sweep around the rim in layered, irregular waves.

Frederick Carder developed Steuben's extensive range of colored and decorative art glass after the company was founded in Corning, New York, in 1903. Carder-era pieces are particularly celebrated for combinations of optic effects, applied threading, unusual color, and hand-shaped forms. Museum examples confirm Steuben pieces designed by Carder during the 1910s–1920s using blown and molded techniques with carefully tooled finishes.

The wide, shallow form makes this especially effective as a centerpiece or decorative bowl, but it also makes an extraordinary candle vessel. The clear glass allows the glow of the flame to illuminate the foot and textured body, while the cranberry reeding becomes the focal point around the rim.
