A beautiful late 19th-century Italian Sorrento ware box, crafted from warm-toned olive wood and decorated to the hinged lid with a finely rendered pastoral scene of a gentleman seated upon a log in conversation with a woman standing beside him.

The scene is characteristic of Sorrento pen-work, a highly decorative technique in which fine hand-drawn lines and shading were applied to the wooden surface to create intricate pictorial scenes. Sorrento craftsmen became particularly celebrated during the 19th century for these small decorative objects, which were popular souvenirs for travelers making the Grand Tour. Historical examples combine olive wood with detailed penwork, tinted woods, and other forms of decorative inlay.

The simple rectangular box has softly rounded edges, a hinged lid, original wood interior, and a distinctive diamond-shaped metal escutcheon to the front.

Origin: Late 19th century, circa 1880–1900; Sorrento, Italy.
Material: Olive wood with pen-work decoration and metal escutcheon.
Dimensions: TBD
Condition: Good antique condition with expected age-related wear, including surface scratches, small marks, minor imperfections, and variations to the finish consistent with age and use.
