Sir Walter Scott’s Prose Works, 14 Volumes

A handsome partial set of Sir Walter Scott’s Prose Works, comprising 14 volumes in richly decorated late 19th-century leather bindings. The volumes feature warm chestnut-brown leather spines with gilt decoration, raised bands, and contrasting red and dark brown title labels.

The set includes selections from Scott’s extensive prose writings, including History of Scotland, Criticisms, Life of Dryden, Life of Swift, Paul’s Letters, and Provincial Antiquities, among others. The volumes are particularly attractive as a decorative library set, with the uniform bindings creating the look of a collected Victorian library even though this is not a complete set.

Sir Walter Scott (1771–1832) was one of the defining literary figures of the Romantic era and is best known for his historical novels, including Waverley, Ivanhoe, and Rob Roy. His scholarly and editorial work was extensive as well, and his prose writings encompass literary criticism, biography, Scottish history, travel, and antiquarian subjects. His Provincial Antiquities and Picturesque Scenery of Scotland, for example, combined his interest in Scottish history and antiquities with descriptive writing and illustrations.
