c. 1884 Ridgways "Devonshire" Plate

Sale price$68.00

A late Victorian transferware plate by Ridgways of Staffordshire, England, decorated in the maker's "Devonshire" pattern. Rendered in a rich sepia-brown transfer, the design features songbirds perched among flowering branches, framed by intricate floral grounds and decorative reserves characteristic of the Aesthetic Movement.

The composition combines naturalistic motifs with highly ornamental pattern work, reflecting the influence of Japanese design that shaped much of English decorative arts during the late nineteenth century. Delicate floral details fill the surface, while the warm brown palette lends the piece a softness and versatility that layers beautifully with both antique and contemporary collections.

Registered by Ridgways in 1894, the pattern exemplifies the firm's finely executed Victorian transferware production and remains a wonderful decorative example of the period.
