A wonderfully sculptural Reed & Barton silver-plated centerpiece bowl, model No. 937, designed with sweeping handles and beautifully modeled iris blossoms and foliage.

The low, broad bowl is surrounded by sinuous botanical ornament, with large iris blossoms emerging in relief from the sides and continuing into the base. Curving handles rise from either end like stems, their fluid lines terminating in small flower buds.

The combination of naturalistic flowers, elongated curving lines and asymmetrical botanical forms gives the piece a strong Art Nouveau character, particularly in the way the ornament seems to grow organically from the structure rather than simply being applied to it.

The underside is marked “Med. & Plated by Reed & Barton / Taunton, Mass. / No. 937,” identifying it as an American silver-plated piece by Reed & Barton. The company was one of the major American silver manufacturers based in Taunton, Massachusetts, producing both sterling and plated hollowware.

Originally made as a serving or centerpiece bowl, its shallow, generous proportions make it especially beautiful repurposed as a candle vessel. After the candle is finished, the piece remains a collectible Reed & Barton vessel that can return to use as a decorative centerpiece or serving piece.
