Ralph Stevenson & Son “Cologne” Dinner Plate

A beautiful early 19th-century Staffordshire transferware plate by Ralph Stevenson & Son, decorated in a warm sepia-brown transfer with a picturesque landscape of trees, water, and distant architecture. The central scene is surrounded by an exceptionally detailed border of floral sprays, scrolling foliage, geometric patterning, and fan-like motifs, finished with a softly scalloped edge.

The reverse is marked “Cologne / R.S. & S.”, identifying the maker as Ralph Stevenson & Son of Cobridge, Staffordshire. Ralph Stevenson & Son used the R.S. & S. mark circa 1832–1835, placing this piece among the earlier generations of English transferware rather than the later Victorian examples that are more commonly encountered.

The “Cologne” pattern is particularly lovely for its combination of a restrained monochromatic palette and an unusually elaborate border. It would be beautiful displayed with other early Staffordshire transferware, mixed into a collection of brown and sepia ceramics, or used as a decorative plate where the intricate border can really be appreciated.
