A quietly expressive early 20th-century oil portrait of a young woman shown in profile, her dark hair gathered into a voluminous updo and her gaze lowered in contemplation. Dressed in a softly draped ivory garment, the sitter is rendered against a subdued olive and umber background, allowing the gentle pinks of her complexion and the warm tones of her skin to emerge from the darker surroundings.

Signed Chas. M. Carter along the lower left edge, the portrait is believed to date to the early 1900s, possibly 1907. The partially obscured inscription prevents a definitive reading of the date. Its composition reflects the influence of turn-of-the-century European portraiture, favoring subtle expression, naturalistic modeling, and an understated approach to color.

The painting retains visible areas of paint loss, particularly along the lower edge, offering an honest record of its age. A compelling piece for collectors drawn to antique portraiture, French interiors, and paintings with a distinctly romantic sensibility.

Origin: Possibly France, early 20th century; signed Chas. M. Carter, c. 1900-1907
Material: Oil on canvas, gilt-finished decorative frame
Dimensions: 19.5" W × 22.5" H
Condition: Antique condition with visible paint loss and flaking along the lower edge, including areas where the canvas is exposed. A small area of light-colored paint loss is visible near the sitter's neck, with additional surface wear and age-related marks throughout. The gilt frame shows rubbing and wear consistent with age.
