A beautiful set of six antique fruit knives by Rogers & Bros., each featuring an elaborately chased handle with a delicate botanical design. The substantial handles and sharply shaped blades give the set a particularly handsome presence at the table.
Fruit knives were a specialized part of the Victorian table setting, intended for serving and eating fruit and often produced in decorative patterns to complement formal tableware. Rogers & Bros. was one of the major American manufacturers of silver-plated flatware, and period advertisements from the late 19th century specifically feature sets of six Rogers Bros. fruit knives with chased handles.
Adding to the appeal is the original fitted presentation box, lined in golden satin and velvet. The box is marked Youngdahl & Lilja, 273 W. Madison St., Chicago, identifying the Chicago jewelry and silverware retailer through which the set was originally sold. Youngdahl & Lilja was established in 1889 and specialized in diamonds, watches, jewelry, and silverware.
Beautiful for a fruit course, dessert table, or simply mixed into an antique flatware collection. The ornate handles also make them especially lovely paired with silver serving pieces, pressed glass, or a collection of antique tableware.
