Örtofta Castle Landscape Painting in Ornate Gilt Frame

A beautiful antique landscape painting depicting Örtofta Castle (Örtofta slott) in Skåne, Sweden, rendered from across the water. The picturesque composition centers on the castle's distinctive round tower with its conical roof, surrounded by the estate buildings, mature trees, and reflective water of the grounds.

The painting has a wonderfully atmospheric quality, with a softly luminous sky in shades of blue, cream, and blush above the warm ochre and terracotta tones of the castle. Loose, painterly brushwork gives the scene an especially charming, almost romantic character.

The landscape is presented in an exceptionally elaborate antique giltwood frame, decorated throughout with raised flowers, foliage, scrolling leaves, and gathered ribbon-like ornament. The highly dimensional floral carving creates a wonderful contrast with the comparatively quiet landscape within.

Örtofta is among the historic estates of Skåne, with origins reaching back to the medieval period. The castle's present architectural character was established during extensive rebuilding in the 1850s–60s, when it was remodeled in a French Renaissance style by Danish architect Ferdinand Meldahl. The distinctive round tower visible in this painting is one of the defining features of the estate.

Condition: Good antique condition with expected age-related craquelure, surface wear, and scattered areas of paint loss and abrasion. The gilt frame retains its original finish with rubbing, wear, and patina consistent with age. The reverse retains its older construction and original hanging wire.
