A small antique French devotional travel shrine dedicated to the Virgin Mary, fashioned in silver-toned metal with a pointed Gothic silhouette and a pair of hinged doors. The exterior is decorated with raised fleur-de-lis motifs and topped by a crowned “N.D.” monogram, an abbreviation for Notre-Dame, or “Our Lady.” Comparable French devotional objects of the period were made as portable shrines for personal prayer and travel.

The doors open to reveal a miniature figure of the Virgin Mary set within a warm gilt interior, creating the effect of a tiny chapel or altar. The contrast between the darkened silver-toned exterior and the golden interior gives the piece a particularly atmospheric quality, while the fleur-de-lis ornament reinforces its French Marian character.

Origin: France, late 19th to early 20th century, c. 1890–1920
Material: Silver-toned metal with gilt interior and cast metal Virgin Mary figure
Dimensions: 1.25" W x 2.75" H x 1" D
Condition: Good antique condition with age-related tarnish, oxidation, rubbing, surface wear, and discoloration throughout. Hinged doors remain present and open to reveal the interior figure. Wear and darkening to the metal are consistent with age and devotional use.
