English Neoclassical Sliding Book Stand
A mid-Victorian English sliding book stand crafted in richly figured coromandel wood, known for its deep tone and striking grain. The adjustable form allows the stand to expand or contract, originally designed to support multiple volumes—often used in libraries and studies for reference works or bibles.
The ends are mounted with ornate brass panels, each centered with classical relief figures—likely allegorical or mythological in subject—framed by finely engraved decorative borders. The contrast between the warm brass and the aged wood gives the piece a strong architectural presence, even at a smaller scale.
Origin: England, mid-late 19th century.
Material: Wood with brass mounted relief panels.
Dimensions: Approx. 14.5" L x 6" W.
Condition: Surface wear consistent with age; light patina to brass; structurally sound with smooth sliding function.
