Neoclassical Carved Wood Urn Wall Plaque

A striking carved wood wall plaque, designed in the form of a highly stylized classical urn with scrolling handles, a tapered body, and an elaborate finial.

The carving draws heavily from the vocabulary of Neoclassical design. Its symmetrical urn form is articulated with fluting, incised geometric borders, scrolling handles, and a tall central neck terminating in a carved pinecone or artichoke-form finial. Urns, fluting, acanthus and related classical ornament were widely employed in Neoclassical interiors and could appear as carved appliqués, architectural finials, furniture ornaments, overdoor decoration, and elements of larger wall compositions.

The warm natural wood surface makes this example particularly appealing. Rather than relying on gilding or paint, the ornament is created through the depth of the carving and incised linework, from the elongated flutes of the urn body to the small repeating geometric details across its upper register.
