A striking 19th-century Neoclassical alabaster pedestal, hand-carved in the form of a classical column and richly ornamented with carved foliate details.
The pedestal features a reeded and fluted column shaft, framed by rounded molding and bands of finely carved acanthus leaves, beneath a broad circular display top. The lower section terminates in a substantial stepped base with an octagonal plinth, giving the piece the architectural presence of a miniature classical column.
Carved from warm, creamy natural alabaster, the surface displays beautiful variations in tone and characteristic veining throughout, including darker mineral markings that speak to the natural character of the stone. The carved ornament and architectural vocabulary are distinctly Neoclassical, drawing on the language of Greek and Roman architecture that remained popular throughout European decorative arts during the 19th century.
Comparable French and Italian alabaster pedestals from the period commonly feature fluted or reeded shafts, acanthus ornament, circular tops, and octagonal stepped bases. A late-19th-century alabaster pedestal at Christie's, for example, is described as having a ring-turned column with an acanthus band and octagonal base, while documented French and Italian examples from the same period employ remarkably similar classical forms.
