Minton "Genevese" Covered Waste Bowl, c. 1880

A wonderfully unusual Minton Genevese transferware slop pail liner and fitted lid, dating to 1880. Decorated in Minton's romantic Genevese pattern, the piece features picturesque alpine landscapes surrounded by an elaborate floral and scrolling border, rendered in rich blue transfer against a warm cream ground. Genevese is one of Minton's best-known scenic patterns, originally produced in the 19th century and later reintroduced in darker blue versions around 1900.

Originally made as the removable ceramic liner for a household slop pail, this was a practical but essential vessel in the Victorian home. Slop pails could be used in the kitchen to collect food scraps, peelings, bones, and other organic household waste after meals, or as part of a bedroom washstand for collecting the dirty water left after washing and shaving. The ceramic liner provided a washable interior while the larger outer pail made the contents easy to carry and empty.

Complete Minton Genevese slop pails are unusual surviving pieces, with documented examples retaining their original cane-handled outer pail and ceramic liner. The survival of this original liner and matching lid together, even without its outer pail, makes it an especially interesting and uncommon form of Minton transferware.

Today, the piece is far removed from its humble original purpose and makes a beautiful decorative object in its own right. Display it on a washstand, dresser, bathroom shelf, or open shelving, where the unusual form and richly detailed Genevese scenery can be appreciated.
