Meriden Neoclassical Greek Key Sugar Bowl

An elegant Victorian covered sugar bowl by the Meriden Britannia Company, featuring an urn-shaped body raised on a pedestal foot with graceful loop handles. The piece is richly ornamented with Greek-key decoration, beaded borders, stepped bands, and a tiered domed lid topped with an architectural finial, giving it a distinctly Neoclassical character.

The underside is marked “Meriden B. Company” and “Quadruple Plate,” identifying it as silverplate produced by Meriden Britannia. The “Quadruple Plate” designation indicates a heavier silver-plating process, and its use helps place the piece in the late 19th century, before approximately 1896.

Meriden Britannia was one of the leading American manufacturers of silver-plated hollowware during the Victorian era, producing elaborate tea, coffee, and table wares in designs ranging from highly naturalistic Aesthetic pieces to more classically inspired forms. The covered sugar bowl was an integral part of the traditional tea and coffee service, intended to hold sugar for guests to add to their drinks.

The combination of classical Greek-key ornament and elaborate Victorian detailing makes this a particularly handsome example of American silverplate from the period.

Styling: Beautiful as part of an antique tea or coffee service, but equally useful for entertaining today. Fill it with sugar cubes, wrapped sweets, or other small treats, or style it on a dining-room sideboard, bar cart, or kitchen shelf where its architectural form can really shine.
