A wonderful, rustic early 20th-century South-Eastern European folk-art water jug, hand formed from reddish terracotta with a rounded body, narrow neck, and simple loop handle. The upper portion is decorated with a distinctive marbled slip effect, with softly flowing bands of green, blue, cream, and brown creating an almost painted, abstract pattern across the warm earthenware ground.
The irregularity of the form, hand-applied decoration, and beautifully weathered surface are characteristic of traditional folk pottery made for everyday use. Similar single-handled terracotta water vessels from South-Eastern Europe were produced as utilitarian household wares and continued to be made into the early 20th century.
A perfect piece for bringing a little old-world, collected character to a space.
Origin: Early 20th century, c. 1900–1930; South-Eastern Europe.
Material: Hand-formed terracotta with hand-applied slip decoration.
Dimensions: 12" H.
Condition: Good antique condition with age-related wear consistent with its age and former utilitarian use. The terracotta surface displays areas of discoloration, mineral deposits, rubbing, and accumulated patina throughout, with variation and wear to the painted/slip decoration.
