An English silver-plated biscuit barrel with a cylindrical body, domed cover and urn-shaped finial, raised on a circular base with sculptural paw feet. Delicate bands of floral and foliate ornament encircle the body and lid, framing a vacant circular cartouche embellished with scrolling flourishes. The restrained shape allows the intricate surface decoration to stand out, while the animal feet lend a particularly charming detail at the base.
Bearing the reported mark of the Alexander Clark Company of London, this piece belongs to the tradition of decorative silver tableware made for serving and entertaining. The firm, established around 1891, produced both silver and electroplate, including its documented Welbeck silverplate line. A handsome addition to an afternoon tea arrangement or dining-room sideboard, the barrel remains decorative between gatherings, with its fitted cover completing the architectural silhouette.
