A substantial English silver-plated-on-copper biscuit barrel, beautifully detailed with lion-mask ring handles, bold gadrooned borders and its original raised serving stand.
The cylindrical body is framed above and below by deeply molded bands of repeating gadroons, giving the piece an almost architectural quality. At either side, sculptural lion masks hold loose ring handles, a classical detail that adds just enough ornament against the otherwise polished body. The fitted lid is crowned with a small foliate finial, while a fine rope-like border finishes the edges.
The barrel rests on its original oval silver-plated stand, edged in coordinating molded decoration and raised on four wonderfully detailed foliate feet. Together, the barrel and stand have the presence of formal English tableware while remaining wonderfully useful in scale.
The underside is stamped “Silver on Copper” and “Made in England.” Originally intended as a biscuit barrel or covered table box, the form translates beautifully into a substantial candle vessel. Once filled, the smooth cylindrical interior provides a generous wax surface while all of the exterior ornament remains visible.
Style it on a dining table, library table, kitchen island or mantel with antique books, transferware, brass candlesticks or other old silver. After the candle is finished, the barrel can return to life as a decorative covered box, biscuit container or tabletop piece, with the original lid and stand kept together.
Origin: England, Late 19th century to early 20th century
