A charming vintage English ceramic marmalade jar produced for James Keiller & Son Ltd., the celebrated Scottish preserves manufacturer whose history is closely associated with the development of Dundee orange marmalade. With its cream-colored glaze and original black transfer-printed advertising, this wonderfully nostalgic piece is a beautiful example of traditional British kitchenware.
The cylindrical jar features a simple, utilitarian form with a slightly raised rim and a printed label framed by an ornamental wreath. The lettering reads JAMES KEILLER & SON LTD. / DUNDEE / ORANGE MARMALADE, accompanied by the company's historic 1797 establishment date. Additional lettering identifies the original contents as a one-pound quantity of marmalade made with sugar, syrup, and Seville oranges, produced in Great Britain by James Keiller & Son Ltd. of Dundee and Croydon.
The Keiller family's marmalade-making business began in Dundee, Scotland, in the late 18th century, eventually becoming one of Britain's best-known preserves manufacturers. Their distinctive ceramic jars became familiar household objects, valued for their durability and practical design. Today, surviving examples are collected for their advertising graphics and connection to the history of British food production.
Originally intended for the pantry or breakfast table, this jar lends itself beautifully to decorative reuse. Filled with flowers, holding kitchen utensils, or displayed among antique crockery and collected ceramics, it offers a little piece of British culinary history with plenty of cottage character.
