J. Wedgwood "Peruvian" Dessert Plate, c. 1849

A beautiful mid-19th-century Staffordshire ironstone dessert plate by John Wedgwood, decorated in the "Peruvian" pattern in rich mulberry transfer.

The plate features a romantic landscape scene depicting figures strolling beside a picturesque body of water, with dramatic mountains, architectural ruins, trees, and a classical fountain creating an atmospheric pastoral scene. The central vignette is framed by an elaborate border of scrolling foliage, flowers, geometric motifs, and additional scenic panels.

Produced in 1849, the Peruvian pattern is a wonderful example of the romantic landscape transferware popular in Victorian England. The pattern is documented in several forms and colorways, with the mulberry version particularly beautiful for its softly graduated, painterly quality.

The reverse bears the distinctive J. Wedgwood mark and registration diamond. Importantly, this mark refers to John Wedg Wood of Tunstall, not Josiah Wedgwood; John Wedg Wood operated from the 1840s through the 1850s and used several variations of the J. WEDGWOOD mark.

A gorgeous example of early Staffordshire transferware, particularly lovely displayed with other mulberry pieces or layered into a collected transferware wall.
