A charming mid-19th-century English tea bowl and saucer in the romantic “Geneva” pattern by John Wedg Wood, decorated in rich red transfer with an atmospheric landscape of exotic architecture, water, trees, and figures.

The scene is surrounded by an elaborate border of scrolling foliage and flowers, with the softly diffused quality characteristic of early red transferware. The tea bowl is particularly lovely for its compact scale and richly decorated exterior, while the matching saucer carries the same scenic design and ornate border.

Despite the familiar-looking name, this was not the Wedgwood pottery of Josiah Wedgwood. The mark “J. WEDGWOOD” was used by John Wedg Wood, a Staffordshire potter and descendant of the Wood pottery family. He occupied the Woodland Works in Tunstall from 1845 until his death in 1857, producing ironstone and earthenware wares with a significant portion of his production intended for the American export market. Archaeological excavations at the Woodland Works have recovered John Wedg Wood examples of “Geneva,” “Marble,” and “Peruvian” transferware, with registration marks dating examples to 1847–1850.

The March 17, 1847 registration date on this example places its production squarely within John Wedg Wood’s early period at the Woodland Works. Registration marks are particularly useful for dating 19th-century British transferware, as they were applied to many patterns registered with the British Patent Office during this period.

A wonderful example of early Victorian transferware, equally suited to afternoon tea, a collected tablescape, or display alongside other antique ceramics.
