A beautiful early Victorian J. Wedgwood “Columbia” plate, transfer-printed in blue over an ironstone body, with the pattern design registered August 23, 1848, as recorded by the British registration diamond on the reverse.
The plate features a romantic landscape scene at center, with figures gathered along a terrace overlooking the water, surrounded by distant mountains, classical architecture, and dramatic trees. The scenic center is framed by an elaborate border of floral garlands, architectural vignettes, and scrolling ornament, giving the plate a wonderfully detailed and distinctly Victorian character.
The reverse bears the Columbia pattern mark, J. Wedgwood maker’s mark, and British registration diamond corresponding to August 23, 1848. British registration diamonds were used to record protected designs rather than individual manufacture dates, so the mark establishes the registration date of the Columbia design and provides an important terminus for dating the piece.
A beautiful piece for a transferware collection or for display layered into an antique cupboard, plate rack, or dining room wall. The classic blue-and-white coloring is particularly lovely mixed with red transferware, ironstone, and other early Staffordshire pieces.
