J. Heath & Co. “Lombardy” Luncheon Plate, c. 1835

A beautiful early 19th-century Joseph Heath & Co. “Lombardy” plate, transfer-printed in a soft blue and dating to approximately 1835–1841.

The central scene presents a romanticized Italian landscape, with elegantly dressed figures traveling by gondola across a lake surrounded by fanciful architecture, distant mountains, and tall Lombardy poplars. The picturesque composition reflects the Romantic taste that became increasingly important in English transferware during the 1830s, when imagined European landscapes offered an evocative alternative to the earlier Chinese-inspired patterns.

The broad border is especially lovely, densely filled with scrolling foliage and flowers interspersed with small architectural landscape vignettes. Its intricate engraving creates an almost textile-like field of blue around the comparatively open central scene.

The reverse bears the printed “Lombardy / J. Heath & Co.” pattern and maker's mark. Above it is the firm's characteristic impressed circular “propeller” or potter's-wheel mark, which is documented on other Joseph Heath & Co. examples of the Lombardy pattern.

A particularly beautiful early example of English scenic transferware, lovely displayed in an antique cupboard or plate rack, incorporated into a blue-and-white plate wall, or collected alongside other early Staffordshire patterns.
