A unique hand-painted rug design sample, dating to approximately the 1920s, depicting a richly colored geometric and floral pattern in shades of rust, aqua, blue, cream, taupe, and muted brown. The carefully rendered grid gives the impression of individual stitches or woven elements, illustrating how the proposed design and color palette would translate into a finished rug.
These small-scale design studies were used in the planning and presentation of custom rugs, allowing designers and clients to review proposed patterns, motifs, and color combinations before a finished rug was produced. The detailed hand-painted work offers a fascinating glimpse into the design process behind bespoke floor coverings. The study is presented beneath a wide mat and housed in a beautifully figured tiger maple frame.
