Hand-Painted Dresden Porcelain Inkwell

A wonderfully decorative 19th-century Dresden porcelain inkwell, attributed to the Helena Wolfsohn porcelain-decorating workshop, with delicate hand-painted floral decoration, rich green enamel, gilt botanical details, and an unusually charming form.

The covered inkwell has a softly scalloped, flared body raised on four sculptural feet, with a dark metal collar surrounding the opening and a domed lid. A small green handle projects from one side, adding to its wonderfully ornamental character.

The underside bears the distinctive blue crowned “D” mark associated with Helena Wolfsohn’s Dresden decorating workshop. Wolfsohn's studio was active in Dresden beginning in 1843 and was known for decorating porcelain blanks acquired from other manufacturers in elaborate Meissen-inspired styles. The crowned-D mark is documented on Wolfsohn pieces from the 19th century, including examples dated to the mid-to-late 1800s.

The additional number on the underside appears to be an inventory, shape, or pattern number rather than a date, so I would not use it to date the piece.

Styling: Originally intended as a writing-desk accessory, this little inkwell is particularly fun outside its original purpose. It would make an excellent match holder on a coffee table, mantel, bedside table, or bar cart, with the covered form keeping matches contained while the porcelain reads as a decorative object in its own right.
