A beautiful 19th-century toleware serving tray, painted with a colorful floral bouquet against a deep black ground. The rectangular form has softly rounded corners, a raised rolled edge, and pierced handles at either side, a configuration found on English and Continental European tole trays throughout the 19th century. Comparable period examples combine the same black-painted ground, central floral decoration, raised border, and pierced carrying handles.

At the center is a wonderfully detailed arrangement of flowers and foliage painted in warm ochre, rust, red, cream, and green. Loose scrolling flourishes frame the composition at the corners and continue around the handles, giving the tray decoration without overwhelming its beautifully aged black surface.

“Toleware” traditionally refers to painted or japanned sheet-metal household wares, particularly trays and other useful objects that were then embellished by hand. Floral decoration became especially characteristic of 19th-century examples, ranging from relatively restrained botanical sprays to elaborate bouquets and gilt ornament.

This example has especially appealing age. Fine surface crazing, rubbing, scratches, and losses to the painted decoration have softened the black ground and floral painting, creating the patina that makes antique tole so decorative today. It remains a functional serving piece, but its generous painted surface also makes it particularly good displayed upright on a shelf, propped on a mantel or hung as wall decoration.

Origin: Europe, 19th century
Material: Painted metal / toleware
Dimensions: 23" L x 17.5" W
Condition: Good antique condition with extensive age-related surface wear, including crazing, scratches, rubbing, scattered paint loss, and wear to the floral decoration and black ground. The aged surface and patina are integral to the character of the piece. Please review photographs as part of the condition description.
